eero routers

eero's entire strategy is removing every decision from the owner: no local UI, no manual configuration, one app, and hardware that treats Wi-Fi as infrastructure to be installed once and never opened again.

The bet: simplicity is the product, not a feature of it

Other mesh brands treat "easy setup" as a checkbox next to a list of advanced options for people who want them. eero doesn't offer the advanced options at all — no local web UI, no built-in VPN server, no static routing, no path to third-party firmware. That's not an oversight; removing the surface area a user could get lost in is the actual engineering discipline eero is known for, and it's the reason the company is credited with creating the plug-and-forget mesh Wi-Fi category in the first place. Every generation since has kept the same rule: whatever changes about the radios or the Wi-Fi standard inside the box, the app and the five-minute setup flow don't.

Selling software, not gating hardware

The monetization follows the same logic as the hardware philosophy. eero doesn't charge for the thing it's confident about — Wi-Fi coverage works fully, on every model, with no subscription — and instead sells optional software on top of it: eero Secure and eero Plus, for content filtering, ad blocking, and bundled third-party apps like 1Password and Malwarebytes. That's upsell, not a paywall on core function, which is a real distinction from a competitor that meters basic security behind a required trial.

Since Amazon acquired eero in 2019, the same instinct toward tight, opinionated integration has extended into Amazon's own ecosystem — deep built-in support for Alexa and Ring specifically, rather than a platform-neutral smart-home standard. That's a real convenience if you're already inside Amazon's ecosystem, and a real lock-in if the goal was to stay neutral between platforms.
