Every router in this catalog has been looked up in OpenWrt's own Table of Hardware, and this page publishes what the lookup found — including the 67 that came back with nothing, and the one that came back too ambiguous to call. Each row carries the model string that matched, the release that supports it, the wireless driver, and the date somebody checked.

This is not a list of routers that run OpenWrt

That list exists and it is short: the OpenWrt routers guide is the buying page, and it does what a buying page should, which is show you the ones that work. This page is the working file behind it. Its value is the part a buying guide throws away — the 67 routers where the answer was no, when that was established, and what the check actually consisted of.

That matters because a negative here is a claim with a shelf life. OpenWrt gains device support in most releases and effectively never withdraws it, so a "no" ages in one direction only. A no from last month and a no from three years ago are different statements, and every no on this page is dated for that reason.

Preinstalled OpenWrt is not OpenWrt support

These are two different claims and conflating them is the most common error in this subject, including on this site. GL.iNet's routers ship a vendor build derived from OpenWrt 21.02 as their stock firmware. That is real and it is useful, and it is not the same as the OpenWrt project supporting the hardware, which is what lets you flash a current mainline release and keep getting them.

The catalog tracks the two separately, and until this audit it got them wrong. A rule that preinstalled firmware implied mainline support put the support flag on the GL.iNet Opal and the Slate 7, neither of which has a Table of Hardware row at all. It survived a full audit before being caught. Both are listed below under the negatives, where they belong.

Found something, not willing to call it

A model-name search can return a row for a router that is not the router you searched for. A near-miss is a lead, not a verdict, and resolving one means confirming the exact SKU and hardware revision rather than accepting a name that looks close enough. These are the rows where that confirmation has not happened, so nothing is claimed either way.

ASUS RT-AX57

The only ToH hit is the RT-AX57M, a distinct and currently sold SKU with its own ASUS product page. Reading that row as covering the RT-AX57 would be a claim about hardware nobody checked.

The same rule caught a second router that is not currently published here, the TP-Link Archer AX21: the Table of Hardware confirms hardware version v4, while v3, v4 and v5 are all still sold under that name. An earlier pass flagged it anyway, reasoning that the catalog records no hardware revision so the flag only claims that some revision works. That reasoning is the bug. It was reverted.

Supported — 11 routers

A Table of Hardware row for this exact model, on a numbered release rather than a snapshot, with a mainline open wireless driver. All three are required. A snapshot-only row means the port is experimental, and a proprietary or missing driver means Wi-Fi does not work under OpenWrt even where the box boots and routes.

Two of these matched on the model number while the Table of Hardware spelled the name differently, and were confirmed by hand against the manufacturer's own page for the same SKU before being accepted: the GL.iNet Slate Plus, whose row carries a "(Slate Plus)" suffix, and the Spitz AX, filed under GL-X3000 with NR as a hardware version rather than under GL-X3000NR. Where a row names the revisions it covers, they are printed, because an exact model match against a revision nobody sells is the trap in the section above.

The other 6 do not, and for one of them that is a fact about the record rather than about us: the MikroTik hAP ac³ has no device page, and was matched on its model string and its manufacturer page. The rest were checked against the same data and simply had no URL written down at the time. The model string is printed either way, since that is the thing you would search for.

No support found — 67 routers

Checked, nothing qualifying found. That is a weaker statement than "this router cannot run OpenWrt" and a much stronger one than silence. Where a manufacturer's whole lineup was checked in one pass, the finding is stated once for the group rather than repeated per model, because it was one finding.

TP-Link 16

No ToH row for any current TP-Link entry. The TP-Link models OpenWrt does cover are older Archer C-series, not this lineup.

  • Slate 7 ProExact ToH match on GL-BE10000 with the mainline mt76 driver, but its current release is `snapshot` — master-only and experimental, which the check excludes. This is the row most likely to flip once a numbered release lands.

How a row gets here

The source is openwrt.org/toh.json, the structured export the human-facing hardware table is itself built from, rather than the table's web interface, which is a JavaScript application that returns navigation chrome to anything that fetches it as text. A candidate has to match by exact model string, cover the hardware revision actually being sold, name a numbered current release, and use a mainline open wireless driver.

Any of those failing means no support flag, and the reason gets written down instead. That asymmetry is deliberate: a missing flag costs a reader one search, and a wrong flag costs them a bricked router. Where the record lists functions that do not work under OpenWrt, the caveat is published next to the claim it qualifies rather than left in a footnote — the ASUS ZenWiFi BT8 is supported and loses its 6 GHz radio on US-region units, and both halves of that are on its row above.
