Netgear routers
Netgear splits its consumer lineup into Nighthawk, for standalone routers and modem-router combos, and Orbi, for mesh — plus a cellular Nighthawk line that doesn't fit either bucket cleanly.

Nighthawk and Orbi aren't a good/better split
It's tempting to read Orbi as "the good version of Nighthawk," since it costs more, but the actual difference is coverage shape: Orbi is multiple matched units meant to blanket a larger home, Nighthawk is a single router meant to sit next to your modem. A Nighthawk router with a strong Wi-Fi 7 radio will outperform an entry Orbi set at short range — the mesh premium buys square footage, not raw throughput.
Netgear's modem-router combos (Nighthawk CAX-series) are a genuinely different product from either line: a DOCSIS cable modem and router in one box, which saves a rental fee from your ISP and a second device on the shelf, at the cost of needing your ISP to certify that exact model.
Where the money goes after purchase
Most Nighthawk and Orbi routers ship with a threat-protection feature built in, but it's a 30-day trial of Netgear Armor, not a permanent one — continuing past the trial costs about $100/year (or $150/year for the higher Armor Plus tier, which adds a bundled VPN and unlimited ad blocking). That's a real recurring cost to weigh against a router like ASUS's, whose equivalent AiProtection ships free for the life of the router. Basic Wi-Fi, parental scheduling, and the hardware specs on this site's spec table are unaffected either way — the subscription is specifically for the ongoing security-scanning layer on top.
Netgear's cellular Nighthawk line (the M-series) is built for LTE/5G as a primary or failover connection rather than fixed broadband, and is closer in use case to GL.iNet's cellular routers than to the rest of the Nighthawk family it shares a name with.
