The short answer

Buy the hAP ax³ if you are buying a MikroTik at all. The radios are identical — same AX1800, same 574 and 1200 Mbps, same everything wireless — so the $40 buys nothing you can see in a Wi-Fi test. What it buys is the part that actually limits a RouterOS box: double the CPU clock (1.8 GHz against 864 MHz), a 2.5 Gbps WAN port instead of gigabit, a USB 3.0 port, and **RouterOS licence level 6 instead of level 4**, which raises the ceilings on tunnels and sessions that the software itself enforces. Buy the hAP ax² only if the budget is genuinely fixed at $99, or if you need its slightly higher PoE output. On a platform bought for routing rather than for Wi-Fi, the cheaper unit is limited in exactly the places you will meet first.

The Wi-Fi is the same, so ignore it

Both are AX1800: 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz, two streams each. Same numbers, same generation, same Qualcomm IPQ-6010 silicon family.

Nobody buys a MikroTik for the Wi-Fi anyway, and here the specification agrees with that instinct — there is no wireless decision to make between these two. Everything that separates them is inside the router or on the back of it.

The CPU clock doubles

The hAP ax² runs its IPQ-6010 at 864 MHz. The hAP ax³ runs the same chip at 1.8 GHz.

On a RouterOS box this is the specification that matters most, because RouterOS is a routing operating system and routing is what loads the processor: firewall rules evaluated per packet, NAT at line rate, IPsec, queues, and the scripting people buy MikroTik to run. A device that will happily push a gigabit while idle can fall over on the same traffic once you put twenty firewall rules and an IPsec tunnel in front of it.

Doubling the clock does not double throughput in a simple way, but it moves every ceiling in the same direction, and it is the difference you will meet first if you use the router the way MikroTik buyers use routers.

The WAN port changes class

The hAP ax² has five gigabit ports. The hAP ax³ has four gigabit ports and one 2.5 Gbps port, and its WAN is rated at 2500 Mbps against the ax²'s 1000.

If your internet connection is faster than gigabit, that single port decides this comparison on its own — the hAP ax² cannot accept more than 1 Gbps from your ISP no matter what else it does well.

The hAP ax³ also adds a USB 3.0 port, which on RouterOS means storage, or a cellular modem as a backup WAN. The ax² has none.

RouterOS licence level 4 against level 6

This is the MikroTik-specific difference, and it is the one least likely to appear in a review.

RouterOS is licensed in levels, and the level is fixed to the hardware. The hAP ax² ships level 4; the hAP ax³ ships level 6. The level does not change what the router is capable of in principle — it sets the software's own limits on things like the number of simultaneous tunnels and sessions, with level 6 raising or removing ceilings that level 4 imposes.

For a home router doing NAT and Wi-Fi, level 4 is unlikely to constrain you. For the site-to-site VPN and multi-tunnel work people specifically choose MikroTik for, the difference is real and cannot be bought later — you would be replacing the hardware.

Check MikroTik's current licence-level table against what you intend to run before deciding this does not matter to you.

What the hAP ax² keeps

Two things, and they are narrow.

It offers slightly more PoE output, 16.8 W against the hAP ax³'s 15 W, which could matter if you are powering a camera or an access point right at the limit. Both accept passive PoE in and both take a wide 12–28 V input.

Both are fanless and wall mountable. The hAP ax³ has the wider operating range, rated to 70 °C against the ax²'s 50 °C, which is worth knowing for a cabinet or an outbuilding.

Read the feature rows on this pair with particular care. MikroTik documents capability line-wide in RouterOS rather than per SKU, so the table shows the ax² listing MU-MIMO and beamforming while the ax³ lists a local web UI and USB storage sharing. Those are extraction artefacts of how MikroTik publishes, not a claim that either router dropped a feature the other has. Both run the same RouterOS v7.

The honest recommendation

The $40 is worth paying. Not for the Wi-Fi, which is identical, but because every constraint that will actually stop you — processor headroom, a gigabit WAN ceiling, no USB, and a lower licence level — sits on the cheaper unit, and none of them can be upgraded afterwards.

Buy the hAP ax² when $99 is the budget and the job is small: a second router, a lab, a site where nothing is going to change. Buy the hAP ax³ everywhere else, and treat the price gap as what it is — the difference between a MikroTik you will grow out of and one you will not.
