What Wi-Fi 6 changed
Wi-Fi 6 was never mainly about peak speed. Its improvements are about handling many devices at once, which is the actual failure mode in a modern home.
OFDMA lets the router talk to several devices within a single transmission rather than serving them one at a time. MU-MIMO does something similar across spatial streams. BSS colouring reduces the time your router spends waiting for a neighbour's network to go quiet — the dominant problem in flats and dense housing. And Target Wake Time lets battery devices agree on when to check in, which matters if you have a lot of sensors and smart plugs.
None of that shows up in a speed test with one laptop. It shows up when thirty things are connected at once.
Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 6E vs Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 6E is Wi-Fi 6 plus a 6 GHz radio. Same protocol, extra spectrum — much less congested, shorter range, and it doesn't pass through walls as well. It was a narrow window of a product generation and has largely been replaced by Wi-Fi 7, which includes 6 GHz and adds MLO and 320 MHz channels on top.
If your internet connection is a gigabit or below and your devices are a few years old, Wi-Fi 6 will not be the limiting factor. Spend the difference on coverage — a mesh system — or on a router with the VPN and firmware features you actually want.
What to compare here
Within this list the meaningful differences are the port layout, whether there's
a 2.5G WAN port, USB storage sharing, and VPN support. The radio specs cluster
tightly; the feature sets do not. Each product page breaks all of it out, and
the sidebar filters on / will narrow this list further.
