Backhaul is the whole ballgame
Every node has to get its data back to the one plugged into your internet. How it does that is the difference between a mesh that helps and one that halves your speed.
Wired backhaul — Ethernet between nodes — is far and away the best option. It costs nothing in wireless capacity and turns the mesh into what is really several access points sharing a name. If you can run a cable, or already have coax or powerline, do that. Nearly every system here supports it, and it's listed per product.
Dedicated wireless backhaul means a whole radio is reserved for node-to-node traffic. This is what most tri-band systems use the third radio for, and it's why a tri-band mesh usually beats a dual-band one at the same price.
Shared backhaul is the dual-band case: the same radio serves your devices and carries node traffic. Every hop roughly halves throughput. It still works — half of a strong signal beats all of a weak one — but it's why adding nodes past two or three stops helping.
Reading the coverage numbers
Manufacturer coverage figures assume open floor plans and few walls. They are useful for comparing products from the same brand and close to useless across brands. Where a pack lists a coverage figure we record it per variant, since a 3-pack and a 2-pack of the same system quote different numbers.
Node count matters more than the number: two nodes placed well beat three placed badly, and a node needs a good signal from the previous one to be worth anything. Halfway between the router and the dead zone, not in the dead zone.
Mesh or a single router?
A single strong router covers most flats and many small houses, and costs less than any mesh here. Mesh earns its price on square footage, awkward layouts, and solid walls — not on speed. If your problem is that one room is slow, try a better single router first.
