The short answer

Buy the eero 7 unless you have a specific reason not to. It covers the same square footage, and its 5 GHz radio is actually faster than the Pro's. The eero Pro 7 earns its money in three situations: internet faster than 2.5 Gbps, where its 5 Gbps ports matter; a home dense enough with Wi-Fi 7 clients that a dedicated 6 GHz band is worth having; or a wireless backhaul that needs the extra band to stay out of the way. Outside those, the Pro costs $350 more at the 3-pack for capacity you will not use.

The one spec that actually separates them

The eero Pro 7 has a 6 GHz radio. The eero 7 does not. Everything else in this comparison is downstream of that.

That radio is worth 5647 Mbps at 320 MHz — the widest channel Wi-Fi 7 defines, and one that exists only in the 6 GHz band. It is clean spectrum with almost no legacy traffic on it, which in a crowded apartment building is worth more than the raw number suggests. It is also useless to any device that can't reach 6 GHz, which today is most of them.

The surprise: the cheaper one has the faster 5 GHz radio

This is the part the spec sheets bury. The eero 7's 5 GHz radio runs 4324 Mbps against the Pro's 2882 — the base model is roughly 50% faster on the band your devices actually use.

The reason is channel width. The eero 7 runs a 240 MHz channel on 5 GHz; the Pro runs 160 MHz. 240 MHz is not a width the standard defines — it's a 320 MHz channel with an 80 MHz chunk punctured out, which is how Wi-Fi 7 hardware reaches past 160 MHz on a band that has no room for a real 320 MHz channel.

The Pro doesn't need the trick, because it has 6 GHz for wide channels. The result is a genuine trade: the Pro is better if your clients can use 6 GHz, and the base model is better if they can't.

Ports, and who they're for

The Pro has two 5 Gbps ports; the eero 7 has two 2.5 Gbps ports. Both are per unit, and both cover WAN and LAN duty.

This only matters at the top of the range. If your internet plan is 2 Gbps or below, the eero 7's ports are not the bottleneck and never will be. If you have a 5 Gbps plan — or you're moving large files between wired machines — the Pro's ports are the reason to buy it, more so than the 6 GHz radio.

Coverage is identical, and the price gap is not

eero rates both systems at the same coverage: 2,000 sq ft per unit, 6,000 for a 3-pack. Whatever you are paying extra for, it is not reach.

What does change with pack size is the gap itself:

A single "from $169.99 vs from $299.99" comparison makes this look like a $130 decision. At the size most people actually buy a mesh system, it's a $350 one, and the Pro is double the price rather than 76% more. Check the row that matches the pack you want, not the headline.

What they share

Both are Wi-Fi 7 with MLO, both do wired backhaul, both carry Thread and Zigbee radios with Matter controller support, and both run the same eero software — same app, same automatic updates, same threat protection and ad blocking behind the same eero Plus subscription. Neither has a USB port and neither offers a local web UI, so if you want to administer your network without an account and a phone, neither of these is the mesh system for you.

The honest recommendation

Most homes should buy the eero 7 and put the difference toward more units, which does more for real-world coverage than a third band does.

Buy the eero Pro 7 if you have multi-gig internet above 2.5 Gbps, a genuinely congested 5 GHz environment, or enough Wi-Fi 7 clients that a dedicated 6 GHz band gets used. Those are real reasons. "It's the newer, more expensive one" is not — especially at the 3-pack, where the same $350 buys a second eero 7 system.
