ASUS RT-BE86U vs RT-BE92U
The short answer
Buy the RT-BE86U unless you specifically want a 6 GHz radio. For $40 less it gives you a 5 GHz radio twice as fast — four streams at 5764 Mbps against two at 2882 — a 2.6 GHz CPU instead of 2.0, a second USB port, and link aggregation. The ports are identical on both: the same 10 Gig WAN, the same four 2.5 Gbps ports, the same 10 Gig LAN port. Buy the RT-BE92U when you own Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 devices that can use 6 GHz, or when you need its cellular failover for a backup connection. That is the whole case for it, and it is a real one — but everything else about the RT-BE92U is a step down from the cheaper router, which is not how the model numbers read.

The 6 GHz radio is paid for out of the 5 GHz one
ASUS calls these BE6800 and BE9700, and the second number is larger. Here is where it comes from.

The RT-BE92U's 6 GHz radio is real and the RT-BE86U has nothing to answer it with. But ASUS did not add that radio on top — it moved two streams off 5 GHz to pay for it. The 2.4 GHz radios are the same.
So the question is not "is more bandwidth better". It is which band your devices land on. Anything older than Wi-Fi 6E cannot see 6 GHz at all, and for those devices the RT-BE86U is the faster router by a factor of two, for less money.
What else the RT-BE92U gives up
This is the part that makes the comparison lopsided, because it is not only the radio.
- The CPU drops from 2.6 GHz to 2.0 GHz. Router processors matter for NAT at multi-gig speeds, for VPN throughput, and for handling many clients at once. Both routers have a 10 Gig WAN port, and the cheaper one has more processor behind it.
- A USB port disappears. The RT-BE86U has two (USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0); the RT-BE92U has one.
- Link aggregation is listed on the RT-BE86U and not on the RT-BE92U. If you bond two ports to a NAS, check this one directly with ASUS before buying — a blank cell here means ASUS did not state it for that model, not that the router refuses to do it.
RAM is 1 GB on both, flash is 256 MB on both, and both have four antennas.
The ports are identical
Worth saying plainly, because it removes a whole category of reasoning from the decision:
- 10 Gbps WAN on both.
- Four 2.5 Gbps ports on both.
- One 10 Gbps LAN port on both.
There is no wired argument for either router over the other. Whatever you plug in, you plug into the same thing.
What the RT-BE92U genuinely adds
Two things, and they are the only reasons to pay the extra $40.
A 6 GHz radio, with 320 MHz channels. If your phone and laptop are recent, this is the cleanest and least congested band in your house, and no firmware update will give it to the RT-BE86U — it is a radio, not a feature. The RT-BE86U's lack of 320 MHz channel support follows from having no 6 GHz radio at all, which is why it is marked as a verified absence rather than left blank.
Cellular failover, which lets you hang a USB modem or phone off the router as a backup WAN. If your internet going down costs you money, that is worth more than any radio on this page.
Everything else is shared: WireGuard and OpenVPN in both directions, IPsec, AiProtection — which ASUS includes free for the life of the router rather than charging a subscription — AiMesh, VLANs, dual WAN, SSH, and a local web UI.
The honest recommendation
Most people should buy the RT-BE86U. It is cheaper, faster on the band their devices actually use, and better provisioned everywhere except the one radio.
Buy the RT-BE92U if you have 6 GHz clients today, or if cellular failover solves a problem you actually have. Do not buy it because BE9700 is a bigger number than BE6800 — that number counts a band half your hardware cannot join, funded by halving one that all of it can.
